For brands: working with Need to Know IT
This page is for manufacturers, distributors and retailers who want to give us accurate Australian information, or who want to talk about a commercial arrangement. It explains what we accept, what we do with it, and what no payment can change.
Who we serve
Our readers are Australians choosing a NAS, backup, storage or home-server setup: households, home offices, small businesses and home lab users. They come to us for local answers: who sells a product here, who stands behind the warranty, and what happens when something needs repair. Those answers shape our brand profiles.
Ways to take part
- Supply Australian market information. Send verified facts about how your products are sold and supported in Australia (see the checklist below).
- Suggest a correction. If a profile or article is out of date or wrong, tell us what is wrong and where the evidence is.
- Offer a product for review consideration. Sending one does not promise coverage, and it does not influence what we conclude.
- Submit an Australian launch. If you have a genuinely newsworthy Australian launch or change that matters to local buyers, send the details and the date.
- Discuss affiliate or referral programmes. We already use affiliate links and disclose them.
- Enquire about a sponsored feature. We may accept clearly labelled sponsored features, on the terms set out below.
What we will and will not do
We will:
- Read what you send and check it against public sources.
- Show brand-supplied facts with their source and date, and label them honestly.
- Correct our own mistakes, and tell you what we changed.
Money cannot buy:
- A place in the brand directory, or a better position in it.
- A ranking, a "best of" slot, or a favourable verdict.
- A "verified" label. Nothing is marked as checked because a brand supplied it or paid for something.
- Editorial control, or the right to review or approve our assessments before or after publication.
- Search ranking credit. Every paid link is marked as sponsored.
Coverage is never promised, whether or not you pay. A sponsored feature is not a review.
Australian market information request
We want substantiated facts, not marketing copy. Where you can, include a source link or document, and say whether we may attribute the information to you.
- Australian entity and contact. The operating entity for Australia, if there is one, and the best contact for market questions.
- Products sold here. The product families and models currently sold in Australia, with the dates they became available.
- Where to buy. Official direct and retail routes, and the authorised Australian distributors, as far as you can publicly confirm.
- Warranty. The warranty scope, who issues it, how to start a claim, and how shipping, returns and repairs work. Only state what you are authorised to state.
- Support. The channels, the hours, and whether support is based in Australia or overseas.
- Local differences. Any country-specific restrictions, exclusions or update and support commitments, and any known differences from your global documentation.
- Dated developments. Launches, distribution changes or support changes, with dates and evidence.
- The unwritten part. What should an Australian customer know about buying or supporting your products here that your global website does not explain clearly?
- Sources and permission. Source links or documents, whether we may attribute the information to you, and a date after which it should be rechecked.
Three examples of information that helps readers:
- Who issues the warranty in Australia. Is it the local brand entity, a distributor or the retailer, and is the warranty honoured if the product was bought from an overseas marketplace?
- Where repairs happen. Is there an Australian repair location, or do units go overseas, and who pays for freight?
- How to reach support. Which channels exist for Australian customers, and during what hours? Our profiles say "not confirmed" where we could not find this published.
For consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law, we point readers to the ACCC's guide. We do not describe individual legal entitlements.
How it works
- Submit. Use the contact form.
- Screening. We check that the submission is relevant to Australian buyers.
- Source check. We compare what you sent with public sources.
- Editorial decision. We decide whether and how to use it. Submitting does not guarantee publication.
- Publication or update. Accepted facts appear on the brand profile with their source and date.
- Corrections. If something proves wrong, we correct it and note the change.
How brand-supplied facts are labelled
A fact you supply is shown as "Supplied by the brand, not independently checked" until we can corroborate it from another source. Facts we find in public documents show that source and the date we checked it, as in the sourced facts panel on the QNAP profile. Where nothing is published, the profile says "not confirmed". A brand can decline to take part; we may still publish a profile from public sources.
Editorial independence
Editorial decisions are made by the Need to Know IT Team. Commercial relationships do not change rankings, verdicts or which brands are covered. Sponsored items are clearly labelled, kept separate from editorial content, never placed next to rankings, and followed by a 90-day period in which we do not publish editorial coverage of that brand or topic. Read the full terms in our independence and disclosure policy.
